Creative Exchange 2021

As part of the BA Honours Degree in Visual Communication, students participate in a Creative Exchange where they engage in a short-term collaboration with other young creatives from a different city. The intention of the project is to enable creative networking and cross-disciplinary collaboration as part of the creative process and to link our students and institution to other creative hubs, workshops and educational programmes in the region. Collaboration is often presented as a seamless and fun creative process. The Creative Exchanges enable students to have real experience of a deadline driven collaboration with someone they have never worked with before. Over the years students have found the learnings and insights gained from this experience both enriching and rewarding.

Previous exchanges have taken place in Harare (Zimbabwe) and Maputo (Mozambique). This year the group travelled to Durban and worked closely with a cohort of young creatives based at ArtLab who were in the final weeks of a three-month incubator programme. As part of the outcomes of the Creative Exchange, students need to present tangible creative outputs to an audience in the host city and on their return to the Academy. The projects range across disciplines and can be experimental in nature. The Creative Exchange provides students with a space to play and produce work collaboratively outside of the classroom.

You can see some of the outputs from our students below. Here’s to more collaboration and more creativity!

Gabor Nagy – Photography

Having previously featured Gabor Nagy’s photography on our blog, we thought it was time to share more of his inspiring work.

This series, Madeira by Night, sees Nagy using dramatic lighting effects to bring night time scenes to new life. What a great series of images!

You can see more of Nagy’s work on his website here.

Or you can follow him on Behance here.

Alexander Vidal – Illustration

Alexander Vidal is an LA-based illustrator who focuses mainly on branding and packaging, maps and infographics and children’s illustrations and character designs. Today we’re sharing a selection of illustrations he made for a monthly animal guessing game for Ranger Rick Jr, an American magazine for kids all about nature.

You can see more of Vidal’s inspiring work on his website here.

Bare Mum – Packaging

It’s no secret that loads of products are designed and created for pregnancy and newborns but not many companies focus on the postpartum phase. That’s where Bare Mum come in – they’re an Australian brand focusing on this stage of motherhood. We must admit, we love what they’re doing here! With beautiful design by Soul Studio, this is sure to be a hit with new moms.

Fogo de Chão – Art Direction

Recent weather in Brazil caused snow to fall in some areas that barely ever see it, prompting people to try their hand at making snowmen. While they did their best, we can see that it wasn’t the easiest thing to do!

This was used to great effect by Brazilian steakhouse Fogo de Chão in this campaign by Grupo Rái, which pointed out that Brazilians are much better with fire than they are with snow.

This is such a great example of tactical advertising that really works!

Volkswagen Test Drive – Multimedia

This multimedia experience by Unit9 allows users to experience a virtual test drive in Volkswagen’s new electric SUV the ID.4. You can choose where you want to drive and as the experience takes you through the features of the car you can even change interior lighting and a bunch of other things too. Such a smart way to allow people to experience the car without needing to actually be in it!

Take it for a spin here.
