IKEA Spain – 25th Anniversary

This website was created by MRM Spain and Studio Regale for IKEA’s 25th anniversary in Spain. It offers personalised info about how members of IKEA’s loyalty scheme spent time building furniture, or eating Swedish food – giving a really unique way to experience the site. For this experience though, of course, there is no real user info used – but you get to see how the whole site works.

Such a great project!

Höganäs Chocolate – Packaging

This work by New Zealand based design studio makebardo for Swedish brand Höganäs Chocolate takes inspiration from postcards and stamps to create a modern, timeless design that really feels unique.

What a great way to show connection and communication between cultures (in this case Sweden and Ecuador – where the cacao is grown)!

Alan Berry Rhys – Illustration

Alan Berry Rhys is an illustrator based in Buenos Aires with a lush, signature style we can’t get enough of.

Today, we’re sharing the illustration and character design work he did for Salus, a brand of Yerba Mate in South America. These characters were then animated and applied in the ad you see below, which tells a pretty fun story about how Salus Yerba Mate can make even the devil himself change his tune. We kind of wish we understood more Spanish after watching this one!

Temple of Reason x Applied Illustration Design 3

The illustration students were required to design a set of illustrated patterns in multiple colour ways for the Temple of Reason Summer 2021 male range. The three provided themes that students could choose from was African Summer, Tropical Chaos and Welcome to Paradise.

Four students’ work was chosen and is currently on sale on Temple of Reason’s online shop.

Njabulo Hlophe: Braai Madness

Jay chose the theme ‘African Summer’ and made a point of steering clear from the stereotypical representation of Africa: a warm sunset with an orange tone hitting a large bed of scorching hot sand in the middle of nowhere. Instead, this pattern aims to show what African Summers really look like: vibrant and energetic gatherings of people celebrating the good weather with good food and braais.

Kelsey Fleiner: Rifle Birds

For the theme, Tropical Chaos, Kelsey illustrated tropical birds that exhibit a type of ‘chaotic’ behaviour when looking for a potential mate. The pattern consists of drypoints, gouache paintings and digital distortion of these to create a sense of chaos.

Nthabeleng Pepenene: Christmas

Nthabeleng decided to create a body of work that highlights a different perspective of summer in Africa. This particular pattern showcases Christmas celebrations as integral part of African Summer.

Alexandra Dickson: Faces

Alex combined human and natural elements for the theme ‘Tropical Chaos’ where human elements represent Chaos and the natural elements represent Tropical. This range of patterns, especially ‘Faces’ aims to challenge the stereotypical style of men’s clothing through her more feminine illustration approach.

John Lewis – Christmas TV Ad

Yes, the festive season is upon us, which means that Christmas TV ads are out and about! Today we’re sharing this year’s effort from John Lewis, a department store in the UK, known for their impressive Christmas advertising.

Instead of going for a direct tear jerker, this year’s ad tells a heartwarming story about an alien crash landing to earth and being taught all about Christmas by a local boy. What a great angle!

Pocketverse – Multimedia

Calling all space explorers – this one is for you!

Karsten Weil, a veteran of the multimedia space, created this incredible project – a procedurally generated running in WebGL that uses the PlayCanvas engine. This means every single planet you see when you visit the site is unique! That’s incredible!
