Cumulus/IxDA P-R-E Day Cape Town 2020

We are always proud when our lecturers and staff are asked to be involved in outside discussions about design as a discipline. It shows that we’re on the right track, and that our staff are at the very forefront of their disciplines. As an institution that wants to continue to inspire and innovate – this is really important to us!

Today, we’re sharing an insightful discussion that two of our lecturers took part in (Wessie van der Westhuizen and Werner Staebe) at this year’s IXDA Cumulus PRE-Day along with other thoughtleaders in the design space. It’s a nice meaty discussion, so get a cup of coffee and find a comfortable seat.

To explain more about the day, we’ve included the following details from the press release. You can find the video below.

The Cape Town PRE discussion will explore the 2017 Design Declaration through the lens of Culture and Sustainability. The discussion is aimed to initiate a dialogue between practitioners, academics and researchers within the field.

“Design is an agent for sustainable solutions created for people and supporting the planet on which we rely”

“Design expresses culture. Designers have a particularly potent role in making, protecting, nourishing, enhancing and celebrating cultural heritage and diversity in the face of globalization.”

Main questions are extracted from the Design Declaration

Are we meeting the challenge to produce sustainable solutions?

What is a ’sustainable solution’ in our context?

How does culture influence manifest itself in design?

What should the role of culture be in design?

The session recording will be included in the IXDD World Interaction Design Day 2020 programme, and open to participants of the South African Innovation Summit 2020.

New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority – Poster Campaign

This campaign for the New York State Metropolitan Transportation Authority by the Conquistadors Collective is something really special.

To encourage people in New York to wear their masks, seven different illustrators were commissioned to create their own poster. The only stipulation – they needed to use the shape of the state of New York as a mask motif.

Pandemic Pandemonium – Online Exhibition

Remember that time when one little microorganism threw the whole world into disarray and chaos?

From medical devastation to economic ruination.

From social dismantling to emotional fatigue.

From physical immobility to environmental zest.

A time not so long ago. A time that is still prevalent now.

A time of Pandemic Pandemonium.

The Illustration Department of Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography proudly presents its first ever virtual exhibition – a visual response to life since Covid-19. With works from 3rd year and Honours students, to alumni and lecturers, we invite anyone, anywhere to join us online for this exciting event!

All works will be available to purchase online on the 1st – 15th of October 2020.

All of the details of the exhibition are available here.

1848 – Packaging

What gorgeous packaging for this German weinbrand (we’d call it brandy), by Higgins Design. This product is made using grapes grown in Germany and then aged in German oak barrels, which has informed the design and illustration used here. Such a great example of premium packaging that also shows a huge level of craftsmanship.

We love it!

Correia de Bahia – Print Campaign

Here’s a fun one by Propeg for Brazilian newspaper, Correia de Bahia. We all know that masks have become the ‘new normal’ – at least for the foreseeable future – and many of us will have experienced the frustration of people not wearing their masks properly.

Using some clever photo manipulation techniques, this campaign points out to people that there really is no reason to wear your mask around your chin. Perfect!

Virgil DiBiase – Photography

Virgil DiBiase is a clinical neurologist by trade, but he is also an incredible photographer. Much of his career has focused on dementia, and here, in this series of images from his work, My Husband Won’t Tell Me His First Name, he has attempted to capture the feeling of dementia through the medium of photography.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a better, more poignant project no matter where you look today. This is just incredible.

You can see more of DiBiase’s work on his website here.

Ukrainian Railroad Ladies – Sasha Maslov

It’s hard to find something we don’t think is amazing about this project.

  • Beautiful photography highlighting something most of us probably weren’t aware of (Ukrainian women who work in railroad crossing houses and work as safety and traffic officers).
  • Some really smart design.
  • A website that feels fresh and new, while still keeping you interested and engaged with the content.
  • Smart mouseover techniques and colour choices.
  • Considered typography.

Overall, it’s just great! We’re fascinated about these Railroad Ladies…

The Crumbskees

Such a fun project by Upperquad, a digital studio with offices in Berlin and San Francisco. This browser game called, The Crumbskees, is all about trying to eat as many snacks as you can in the time given in each round of the game. A great way to waste some time and take in some gorgeous design, illustration and sound design. What could be better?

Yukai Du – Stamp Illustrations

Yukai Du is a London-based Chinese illustrator and animator who studied at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts before moving to London and studying further at Central Saint Martins.

Today, we’re sharing her work for Post Office China, which has been recognised in the longlist and shortlist of the Association of Illustrators’ World Illustration Awards 2020. She was commissioned to create stamps to commemorate the five most important and latest technologies in China. We love the detail and hand-drawn style she brings to the work.

You can see more of the designs below.
