Mario Macilau is a self-taught photographer from Mozambique who came from nowhere to achieve his dream. We love his dramatic black and white portraits that highlight social ills while still retaining an artful eye. This is so much more than pure documentary photography.
One can see some Roger Ballen influence in showing people at the fringes of society and the use of props and styling, but Macilau makes it his own – creating images that are more than the sum of their parts.
At just 31, Macilau has so much more to produce and we cannot wait to follow his career.
